•The very first horse race known as the Cheltenham Gold Cup took place in July 1819 on Cleeve Hill, which overlooks the present venue. A horse named ‘Spectre’ romped to victory that day earning his owner 100 guineas in the process.

•Arkle dominated The Gold Cup during the mid 1960’s, winning it three times on the trot from 1964 until 1966 . In fact Arkle was so far ahead of the competition at this time that he was given an incredible starting price of 1/10 – making him the shortest priced winner in the history of the race.

•Long Run won last year’s event and is the favourite to win this year’s race.
