I was recently in Las Vegas Nevada. Las Vegas is of course one of my favourite places in the world (despite the recent nearby earthquakes, the the swarms of locusts inhabiting the area), and it’s certainly my favourite holiday destination. Why? There’s entertainment, gambling, great food, great shopping (and only Federal tax to pay on purchases, not State tax), and great tourist infrastructure that makes it easy to get around.

The locals in Las Vegas are great people too, and I’ve been lucky to strike up friendships with a number of them over the years. The Las Vegas area is very service focused, being used to having tourists around in the year all year. Without the tourists, a lot of Las Vegas would simply shut down – it’s the tourist dollars that really keep the Las Vegas valley area afloat.

The casinos in Las Vegas are not the only attractions, or employers. But they do employ many thousands of people, and they are probably the number one reason that people go to Las Vegas. There are a lot of exhibitions and conferences in Las Vegas too, due to their huge conference and meeting room facilities, and the hotel services that can be provided. Casinos are a very healthy part of the mix of reasons to visit.

I enjoyed visiting the Wynn casino and seeing their fountain show. This is a baby compared to the fountains of the Bellagio, and they’re accompanied by some very unique music that has been specially written about the Wynn. They’re small and colourful, and only play for about 8-10 minutes in a cycle. Located outside the entrance to the Wynn shopping arcade, they’re a nice visual attraction to spend some time on when you’re in town.
